Lady Snowblood Vol. 1: The Deep-Seated Grudge Pt. 1 By Kazuo Koike & Kazuo Kamimura (Dark Horse Manga) www.darkhorse.comLady Snowblood is an indirect inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill - Tarantino came up with the revenge backstory of Uma Thurman's Bride character from the movie based on this manga (and the manga looks to steal a little back from the movie - check out that yellow and black trade dress). Oyuki is Lady Snowblood, an assassin in late 19th century Japan who manages to wind up naked and covered in blood in all but one of the five chapters that make up this book. She seeks vengeance on a gang of four who murdered her family. Writer Kazuo Koike is known primarily for his Lone Wolf and Cub series, which tells the tale of another traveling assassin. While Snowblood is a little more trashy than Lone Wolf and its tales a little less complex, it employs the same story structure of not telling the reader the conditions of the job the assassin has taken only to reveal them as the mission reaches its end - it's like a fun, blood-spattered narrative puzzle. Lady Snowblood is a trashy, violent guilty pleasure - obviously Tarantino took a little of that as inspiration, too.
