Runaways Vol. 4: True Believers By Brian K. Vaughan & Adrian Alphona (Marvel Comics) www.marvel.comRunaways is a superhero comic that real teenagers might enjoy reading. It's hip, it's funny, it's friendly to new readers, and it's got great plots with a terrific cast to back it all up. The Runaways are a team of superpowered teenagers who find out that their parents were supervillains. Having (momentarily) defeated their evil progenitors, now the Runaways track down other misled superpowered youth while ducking foster care at every turn. This volume starts off with a bang when a dying future version of one of the team members comes back in time to warn the Runaways about a kid who will one day become a major supervillain. Meanwhile, a support group of former teenage superheroes decides they need to bring in the Runaways for their own good. The book features sparkling wit from the best writer currently working in mainstream comics, Brian K. Vaughan, who knows how to juggle an ensemble cast and deliver fun cliffhangers and battles. And no teenagers in comics actually look as much like teenagers as the cast of Runaways does thanks to the pen of stylish Adrian Alphona. Echoing Wizard magazine's praise on the back of the book, this is one of the best things to come out of Marvel in years. Marvel has released the book in a cheap $8 manga-sized digest, a smart move that will hopefully be the best tactic to appeal to kids who are just like the cast of this book.
