Though word of a move had been buzzing for months, the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art confirmed the news over the weekend in a press release – the Harvey Awards will no longer call MoCCA home. The industry Award Show had been presented at MoCCA Art Festival for the past two years, with the most recent being awarded in June for 2004.
The announcement once again means the Harvey Awards will be moving to a new home, their sixth in their history. Since starting in 1988, the Awards have called the Chicago Comic-Con, the Dallas Fantasy Fair, WonderCon and the Pittsburgh Comic Con home.
The decision to end the partnership between the awards and MoCCA was made, according to the release, jointly. “MoCCA greatly enjoyed hosting the Harvey Awards these last three years,” MoCCA Chairman Lawrence Klein said, “but we realized that – at this time -- it would be best for us to direct our resources and the focus of our dedicated all-volunteer staff back to the things that MoCCA does best: mounting wonderful exhibits of original comic and cartoon art; providing a venue for comics and cartoon classes, lectures, presentations, panels, meetings, screenings, signings as well as other fun events; and running the annual MoCCA Art Festival.”
No new venue for the Award was named, though it is very likely (and rumored) that many conventions are vying for the ceremony.
