Dramacon Vol. 1 By Svetlana Chmakova (TokyoPop) www.tokyopop.comAs the manga wave grows bigger and bigger, and as the amount of stories there are to import from Japan begins to slowly dry up, we start to get more and more manga created by Americans - Original English Language manga, or OELs. Svetlana Chmakova is actually Russian-born and Canada-based, so none of the above is really relevant - she's simply a comics creator telling stories when you get right down to it. Good ones, too. Dramacon is a sweet tale of a girl at an anime convention developing some self-confidence and falling in love (naturally). You'd have to be partially familiar with manga and anime to totally get the world of Dramacon, but even if you were thrown in blind, Chmakova's energetic art, enticing characters and solid story would be enough to entertain. The book's got a terrific sense of humor and no small amount of charm. A very strong debut.
