Marvel Comics, or Studios, or whatever they call themselves these days, have brought their Iron Man property back to the fold. The age-old character of billionaire Tony Stark and his titular suit of armor has been languishing at New Line for the past two years as an undeveloped film property, but now the film rights have reverted to Marvel – making it one of the prize jewels in a quickly diminishing treasury of characters.
As reported by Variety, Marvel may look to raise extra money in order to produce the film of Iron Man on their own as part of their new production company. Until recently, Marvel characters were all licensed to outside studios to be turned into films.
But now Marvel has raised a bunch of money from the Wall Street types in order to make their own pictures, though it seems that no one has figured out that beyond a couple of major characters (Iron Man, Captain America), most of the big guys have already been filmed. Marvel has raised $525 million from Merrill Lynch to produce up to 10 films, but the Iron Man project would require extra funding since it is not included in that deal.
Keep in mind, Warner Bros.’ currently-shooting Superman Returns is reported to be well over the $200 million mark alone already. And Marvel boss Avi Arad wants to make 10 movies for $525 million? I guess that works if you’re making Power Pack and Ant-Man, which come to think of it, is what Avi has planned.
Previous talent sort of attached to the Iron Man project at New Line have included Al Gough and Miles Millar from Smallville, David Hayter from X-Men, Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook), and some guy named Tom Cruise.
